OUR HISTORY

History of The Wine & Art Festival

The first of its kind

The BNT’s Wine & Art Festival was one of the first events to pair wine and art in The Bahamas. The event was the idea of Mr George Kelly, proprietor of Wholesale Wines and Spirits and long-serving BNT Past President Miss. Diane Holowesko. Mr. Kelly wanted a way to promote his wines and Ms. Holowesko was looking for a way to raise money for the BNT and its work. They both wanted to promote the new artistic talent that was emerging in The Bahamas.

Over the years the event grew from about 20 displaying artists  to over 50 artists and vendors each year showcasing their unique artwork and products. As the festival grew in popularity, we brought on new sponsors, partners, and experiences. Today, Commonwealth Brewery Limited and 700 Wine and Spirits are the presenting partners and sponsors for the festival.

A Growing Festival

The festival began to emphasize wine education and food pairing recognizing that young professionals were part of the new food and wine movement and were interested in pairing foods with the appropriate wines at the event. Patrons began to request music as part of the festival and artists expanded their artistic offerings.

Wine and Art have grown from a small social gathering to an annual feature festival that hundreds of people look forward to every year. Because of how popular the event was, The BNT changed the duration of the event from just one day to an entire weekend. A BNT Members-Only Night is held the Friday before the weekend event. This change from provided our artists and vendors with greater public exposure and benefits as it allowed more people to experience the event. The festival continues to grow and add new features and experiences like the champagne lounge, beer garden after party, educational classes and workshops and culinary demonstrations.

An event with a Cause

The BNT is of course very proud and pleased to have created an event that provides funding for national parks while supporting local artists, musicians, and vendors. The WA festival has stood the test of time, being one of the country’s oldest and longest-running art and culture festivals. Like everyone else in the world, covid stopped the event for happening for 2 years, but we are more than excited to be back hosting these in-person events. We are extremely grateful to event patrons, artists and vendors and of course our sponsors.
